"APPLE 1" (correction) By Marina Petro

You are receiving this post twice because the link to my newsletter didn't work in the first one

"Apple 1"
6x6 inches
Original oil painting on Raymar Canvas Panel
$100 + shipping
Purchase at eBay here
The apple was painted from life and the background spontaneously from my imagination. I had the apple sitting on a white piece of fabric with no real background structure. I like the 'dreamy' quality. I titled this piece 'Apple 1' because I wasn't feeling too creative with titles and noticed that I had another painting called 'Apple.' Assuming I will be painting other lone apples at some point, I decided to begin to number them. This piece looks much better 'in real life' than it does in this photo.

Ah, the sun finally came out just now! It's already 1:30. I had planned to drive into town very early today...but...it's been snowing and pretty windy and I decided to stay put until it tempers. I used my time productively though. Here's the link to the newsletter I just finished. I hope you enjoy it along with today's apple. I'm off to town now...

I send you all my heartfelt wishes for a New Year of good health, good cheer, many blessings and God's Grace...

Today's Quote: "The best way to predict your future is to create it."

"ANGEL DESCENDING" by Marina Petro

Angel Descending
12" x 18" (30.5cm x 45.8cm)
Ink Jet Print on Epson Paper
$29 plus $4 shipping and handling in the US
E-mail me for International shipping rates or other inquiries.

...or email me for other purchasing options

Angel Descending is not a new painting. I painted the original oil on 22" x 28" canvas quite a few years ago but thought I'd offer a print of it today. I always felt that this angel brought blessings with her presence.

I haven't photographed my new paintings. It's been a little difficult to paint and keep up with photographing. I injured my foot in a fall on ice over a week ago and have been hobbling around trying to get the essentials taken care of here in preparation for Christmas. I probably won't be posting until after the holiday...

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a New Year filled with many blessings and God's Grace...

Today's Quote: "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

"FULL MOON 1" by Marina Petro

"Full Moon 1"
6x8 inches
Original oil on gallery wrapped canvas painted around all sides.
Can be hung with or without a frame.
Purchase for $100 at my eBay store here

I've numbered this painting because I suspect I'll be painting many more full moons in the future and it's been a little difficult getting creative with titles for these paintings of the moon surrounded by clouds. If you have any ideas, please let me know. In the past I've called them "Magic Moon" "Magical Moon" Moon Magic" "Moonscape" "Mystical Moon" "Moonglow" ...so I'm up for any suggestions.

In any case, I enjoyed painting this piece. It flowed well and I stopped working on it at the point when I began to struggle.

I'm warming up my studio now and can't wait to start painting. We've been having a snow storm here...about 7 inches so far with considerable drifting...and more to come tomorrow...

"POLKA DOT PEAR 2" by Marina Petro

Polka Dot Pear 2

Oil on Panel

I thought painting the reflection on the bowl would be much more difficult than it was. Always a surprise lurking around the corner. I've called this Polka Dot Pear 2 because I painted another pear on the same fabric a while back and couldn't think of another name...there might be a "3" sometime in the future because I'm happy with how both turned out and the fabric is really fun to paint.

I'm glad to be able to post today. We had an ice storm Thursday and lost power until a little while ago. They are telling us not to get too confident. Power might go out again as the trees begin to thaw. This wasn't fun at all. I walked out to go to my car on Thursday, didn't realize there was ice underneath the tiny bit of snow covering, and fell in the driveway hard and fast. I injured my foot and leg, have been icing it and limping around but it's on the mend. A few years ago we bought a generator so I had limited power...no running water but it wasn't as bad as it could have been and I am grateful for that.

Below is a photo I took from my back door. It really doesn't show the extent of the icing (which was very beautiful).

Holiday Studio Exhibit & Sale

My two friends and acupuncturists, Clarence Lu his wife, Judy Kodela at my Holiday Studio Exhibit & Sale...

No individual painting posted today but you can get a view of one wall of daily paintings I had displayed at my studio sale in the photo above. I need a short break after yesterday. I always minimize the amount of work that goes into preparing for a studio exhibit...and then, getting the studio back into shape for painting.

I will be putting this painting on eBay later next week if someone doesn't scoop it up here or at my studio sale tomorrow.

If you would like a print, I can provide a 6x6 inch version on heavyweight matte paper for $15 + $5 shipping.

A bit of humor here...Garfield was one of my late mother's favorite cartoon characters. She also loved owls and had a small collection of owl knick knacks and Garfield toys. I keep one of her small stuffed Garfields in my car. Mom died in late November 2002. I painted this in her memory last month. This particular Garfield is a small wind-up toy that rocks back and forth when you wind him up. I was 'fooling around' with the owl and Garfield trying to find a composition for a painting when they struck this pose and I had to paint it...I hope you get a chuckle out of it...

"Two Apples"

Original Oil Painting on Raymar Canvas Panel
Purchase at ebay here or email me for other purchasing options.
I've been out since early this morning. Delivered a painting to be included in an exhibit. Visited my acupuncturist...one errand after another so I'm short on words and really need to get into my studio now. Thanks for looking!

Today's Quotation: "When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it - a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand - as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it's bad art."

"SUN STORM" by Marina Petro

"Sun Storm"
6" x 12" Oil on canvas textured board.
Sold

This piece flowed beautifully as I was creating it. Yes, another intuitive painting from my imagination. These spontaneous paintings are much like the mystery of giving birth...moreso than other forms of painting such as still lives or recognizable landscapes where there is a general idea of what the end result is going to be. This is creating in the moment and a real heightening of the senses. I suppose it's more 'genuine.'

I'm not always sure what I am going to paint when I enter my studio. I usually have one or two paintings in process and when the impulse suddenly presents itself to begin a spontaneous painting as this one is, I seize the opportunity. I purchased these long boards with the thought that I'd paint landscapes on them but so far, I've been using them for my cosmic landscapes. This painting will also be available at my Annual Open Studio Exhibit and Sale this Sunday.

3" x 3" (7.7cm x 7.7cm)
Oil on Stretched Canvas
$39 plus $6.00 shipping and handling in the US

Shipped with display easel.
This miniature piece was painted with the same palette as "Toward Heaven" which I posted on November 12, using more pastel colors than I ordinarily do. It will be available at my holiday open studio exhibit & sale this Sunday, unless someone scoops it up right here with PayPal.

Hope you all had a pleasant Thanksgiving. I did. It was one of the more enjoyable ones I can remember. My daughter, Andrea, cooked a wonderful meal. I was very much into the spirit of the day and in deep gratitude...remembering last year at this time when I was just days away from fairly major surgery, quite frightened...and that I could be with my loved ones enjoying this day with all that behind me...and still painting...

"ONE BIG APPLE" by Marina Petro

"One Big Apple"
6"x8" Oil on Raymar Canvas Panel
Purchase here at eBay for $99
I am greatly enjoying painting fruit on decorative fabric. I'd only done this before when I was painting larger (and very few) still lives. The challenge of daily painting has stretched my creativity in ways I could not have imagined. If I hadn't made the commitment to daily (or almost) painting, and blogging, it would be VERY easy to let all life's interferences get in the way. Now it's just the big ones or bunches of little ones in any one day that prevent me from dancing with my easel...usually due to total exhaustion. It does feel like 'someone is watching' and they are...

I was moving my fruit models around on the counter trying to decide on a composition and which ones to choose when these two cuties took this pose. The painting and title were immediately decided on.

This has been one of those extreme technologically challenging days and I can't wait to get away from this computer. It began with trying to figure out Squidoo to make a lens (I was not successful) and ended with a very familiar application giving me major problems and just about freezing my computer...that's where I stopped, decided to post this painting and then hide in my studio away from the rest of the world....see you soon again.

This simple little piece was a joy to paint. Everything just flowed and I was able to complete it in one sitting. I am gearing up for my annual holiday studio sale and exhibit next month. This will be the third one and I am looking forward to it. I underestimated the amount of work/preparation needed the first two years so I am getting things in order a little earlier. Many of my prints and cards will be on sale as well as a selection of original paintings, large and small. I'll keep you posted. Here's a link to a newsletter I sent out last week...forgot to include it in my posts here but better late than never. If anyone subscribing to these posts would like me to place you on my general mailing list, I'll be glad to. Just email me.

PEACH & PEARS by Marina Petro

“Peach & Pears”
6" x 6" (15.3cm x 15.3cm)
Oil on Raymar Canvas Panel
SOLD

This was pure pleasure to paint. There are times when I struggle quite a bit while painting. This wasn't one of them. Everything seemed to come together effortlessly. These daily paintings often take more than one day/sitting to complete. I am pleased with the fruit but even more pleased with the background. By the time I got to finishing up the background I was pretty tired and quickly rendered it with just a few quick strokes.

Below is a quote from one of my favorite books: "The War Of Art" by Stephen Pressfield.

This is a miniature pumpkin I found at our local farm market. The background is a placemat I picked up at a Dollar Store. I'm always on the lookout for interesting fabrics I can use for my paintings. "SUNFLOWER" by Marina Petro

"Sunflower"
6"x8" Original oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas painted around all sides.
$100
SOLD

This was painted from a photo I took of a sunflower in my garden this summer. Every year I intend to pull the sunflowers up when they bend over and groan but never do. This year was no exception. There is something to say, though, about sunflowers when they die. In some ways, they are as enjoyable to view as when they are in full bloom. Lucky me! I found two sunflower quotes.

Today's Quotations: “The gaudy leonine sunflower hangs black and barren on its stalk, and down the windy garden walk the dead leaves scatter, hour by hour”
-Oscar Wilde quotes

“Bring me then the plant that points to those bright Lucidites swirling up from the earth, And life itself exhaling that central breath! Bring me the sunflower crazed with the love of light”
-Eugenio Montale

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Twenty Nine

"Twenty-Nine"
22"x28" Mixed media on canvas
"Be still when you have nothing to say. When genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say and say it hot."
-D.H.Lawrence

This is the last painting in my 'Zone' series. I used a new type canvas called 'Yes' canvas which is quite a bit smoother and accepts the paint I use for these better. The'zone' paintings are more conducive to a smooth surface. It's easier to render detail.

This new canvas is also conducive to any type of water media including watercolor paint which I'm sure must be pretty exciting for watercolor artists as they've been limited to painting on paper.

I'm curious to see what will emerge from my zone next...but...as usual...I have a small daily painting on my easel half finished as well as a beautiful larger autumn scene which is almost finished on another easel. It gets so frustrating (to say the least) wanting to paint in all these styles at once...

There's one more painting I included in the book. I will post it tomorrow. It's an oil painting which combines my other style of visionary painting with the zone style.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Twenty Eight

"Twenty-Eight"
24"x30" Mixed media on canvas

"The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery."
-Carl Gustav Jung

We are almost and the end of the line here with just two more pages left from my book. I hope you've been enjoying this diversion from my small daily painting posts...and... that you might be inspired to paint from your 'zone.'

I had a baffling conversation with a woman (probably in her 60's)who attended my recent gallery exhibit opening. She mentioned she would love to attend one of my 'Painting From The Zone' workshops but was too frightened because she 'can't draw a straight line,'and didn't want to embarrass herself. I tried to assure her that prior painting experience was not necessary, in fact even ever picking up a paint brush was not necessary and in short, it is an experience of discovery and freeing one's dormant creativity. Producing a 'pretty picture' is not the goal. Actually, one of the only 'rules' is that no one comment on what anyone else is doing or even overtly view what anyone else is doing. The paintings are not judged or discussed. I try to sustain an environment of freedom and minimize self-consciousness. I suggested she had this one precious life to explore new experiences...she kept shaking her head. How sad...to be trapped in only what is safe and familiar...

Prints of "Twenty-Eight" are available on 13"x19" heavyweight matte paper mounted on 16"x20" foam board, directly from me, ready to mat and frame to your liking. Larger prints are available from Imagekind (link below) on paper or canvas.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Twenty Seven

"Twenty-Seven"
24"x30" Mixed media on canvas

"Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire."
-Chardin

My valiant attempt at getting more organized and restructuring things around here so I can paint more is falling short of my expectations. I've cut down on cooking, which I don't do much of to begin with. I haven't cleaned in quite some time and in general I'm trying to cut back on other activities. I think it's the many 'glitches' that compromise my time. Last week, I began printing cards and prints for a Halloween Fair I will be participating in. Wouldn't you know it, all the cards that had printed beautifully for years, began printing crooked and in odd ways. It took two days to figure it all out and a lot of wasted paper and ink. Then, PayPal decided to change the way you accessed their buttons...and that took time to finally resolve with the help of David Darrow, another daily painter who created a wonderful 'PayPal Button Machine.' Well, that's enough moaning and groaning for now...

Prints of "Twenty-Seven" are available on 13"x19" heavyweight matte paper mounted on 16"x20" foam board, directly from me. Larger prints are available from Imagekind (link below) on paper or canvas. ImageKind is having a sale on shipping right now...$6 shipping anywhere in US.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Twenty Six

"Twenty-Six"
24"x30" Mixed media on canvas
"The artist vocation is to send light into the human heart."

Autumn here in upstate New York has been magnificent. The colors have been more intense than I ever remember. Took some photos for reference paintings which were highly disappointing once I got them into the computer. The camera is just not seeing what I am seeing. But, I can still glean a few paintings from them. It's getting pretty chilly here too the past few days and the leaves have started to fall...inevitable Winter is approaching.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - "My Brain"

"My Brain"
22"x28" Tempera on paper

"Oh Great Creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives."
-Jim Morrison

Well here it is for all to see. My brain as it was perceived and painted a couple of years ago. Maybe my next painting from the zone will be my brain as it is in 2008. Now I'm curious... This painting was created at a workshop I attended based on the principles of intuitive painting developed by Michelle Cassou who coined her system "Point Zero Painting." This was not new to me as I'd painted like this many many years ago in experimental work I called 'subconscious painting.' It did, however resurrect the desire to work in this way again and what was produced was much more exciting than what I'd done before. This particular piece was painted toward the last day of the workshop when I got into a familiar but temporary struggle with myself approaching a new white piece of paper. I went outside for a break and the thought came in to 'paint your brain.' So I let go of all pre-impressions and just tuned into my brain and began to paint.

I hope I've stimulated even a tiny bit of curiosity for you to begin to explore what you might discover painting from your 'zone.' Start with anything...even a box of crayons would be just fine...Ask yourself 'what wants to be expressed'...get quiet...and reach for the first color that attracts your attention and just begin putting color to paper.

Prints are available on 13"x19" heavyweight matte paper mounted on 16"x20" foam board. directly from me. Larger prints are available from Imagekind (link below) on paper or canvas.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Twenty Five

"Twenty-Five"
20"x24" Mixed media on canvas

"Begin doing what you want to do now. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake."
-Marion Beyon Ray

I was going to post two paintings again today but the 'add image' in 'Blogger' stopped working...at least for now. I've been working on a larger autumn landscape and finished a few smaller daily paintings over the past week or so. I've got one on the easel now that I'm looking forward to working on and completing today. It often takes me more than one day to complete the smaller paintings.

Prints are available on 13"x19" heavyweight matte paper mounted on 16"x20" foam board directly from me at a special price of $29+$8 shipping anywhere in the continental US...through PayPal. Larger prints are available from Imagekind (link below) on paper or canvas.

In the past I mentioned it would be very difficult for me to choose one style to paint in out the the four styles I work in. I ask myself this periodically. If it really came down to it though, I think I would choose painting from 'The Zone.' There is a certain sense of freedom that accompanies painting this way. It's easy to set up and begin painting. I squeeze my paints into an ice cube tray, fill a jar with water, and just begin to paint as the spirit moves me. I also consider these paintings more 'original.' Anyone can do it. There's no training involved. Pure spontaneity...and they continue to intrigue me when I view them. So there it is...painting from 'The Zone' wins...at least today...

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Thirteen & Fourteen

"Thirteen"
20"x24" Mixed media on canvas

"The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed but, not the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."
-Rajneesh

I love the above quotation by Rajneesh...and how true it is. One of the very first memories I have after the birth of my first daughter was the impact and shock of realizing my life had inalterably changed forever. The sense of responsibility was overwhelming. Not sure if I've ever recovered.

When I painted the woman's face I had no idea I was going to paint a smaller figure. As the smaller figure progressed and I impulsively put a red bow in her hair and red shoes, I knew it was me. I had completely forgotten how my mother used to put that red bow in my hair. The shoes were significant too. They were connected to a fairly traumatic experience when I went into the hospital at 5 yrs. old to have my tonsils out. I remember looking down, seeing my red shoes, and then lost consciousness. Strange how these things are stored in deep memory and seek recognition when there is an open channel. This is what makes painting spontaneously from "The Zone" so fascinating.

"The more I know, the less I know, soon I will know nothing. The more I know, the less I speak. Soon I will be speechless."
-Me

OK folks, that's it for today. I'm going back to my studio. I started a painting earlier, got very tired and achey and had to lie down and take a nap. As I was falling off to sleep I was thinking how wonderful it would be to go away to a health spa for a month or so and be taken care of...hot tubs, massages, swimming pool or ocean, someone else to prepare magical meals to melt off weight...dream on, Marina.

Painting From "The Zone" Book - Eleven & Twelve

"Eleven"
24"x30" Mixed media on canvas
"The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been kindness, beauty and truth."
-Albert Einstein

Print available on 13"x19" heavyweight matte paper mounted on 16"x20" foam board directly from me for $29+$8 shipping anywhere in continental US.

'Eleven' was also painted during the time my mother was dying. The lower right has an image that looks a bit like a sarcophagus or wrapped mummy figure in front of a crucifix with a halo of gold. It was fascinating as these images emerged directly from the unconscious. This was the first piece in this series that I painted on canvas and have continued exclusively on canvas since then. I have no patience for framing pieces under glass.

It's been a busy few days for me. I decided to buy a new car (2004)Hyundai Santa Fe. I've heard they are great in snow and I've got a steep hill on the way home and country roads to travel here. My jeep was beginning to show signs of concern and it would have cost more to fix than it was worth. I thanked it...really I did...and gave it back to the dealer I originally purchased it from. Feels like I'm floating on air in the new car. The jeep was a rough ride. Anyway, that certainly cut into my painting time and I'm not happy about it.

I'd love to hear what you think of these paintings from "The Zone." You can click on my blog link below and leave a comment.
