"Black Bird" by Marina Petro

Artist ~ Marina Petro, Saratoga Springs, NY USA

Black Bird
8" x 8" (20.4cm x 20.4cm)
Oil on Canvas
$150 plus $10 shipping and handling in the US
E-mail me for International shipping rates or other inquiries.

Painted on 8"x8" Gallery Wrapped 1 1/2" stretched canvas painted around all sides. Does not need a frame

This is a little different than my usual subject matter and I'm very happy with it. I paint a lot of black birds, crows, ravens, etc...in most of my "Zone Paintings" but this is the first time I've painted one with oil on canvas. The 8x8 inch size canvas is a first as well. I'll be ordering more of them soon. I learn so much with each painting. I'm sure that's one of the compelling factors that keeps bringing me back to the easel day after day. It is truly an adventure!

Today's Quotation: "I do not know which to prefer, the beauty of inflections, or the beauty of innuendoes...The blackbird whistling, or just after."
-Wallace Stevens, American Poet whose work explores the interaction of reality and what man can make of reality in his mind. 1879-1955

"Eggplant" by Marina Petro

Artist ~ Marina Petro, Saratoga Springs, NY USA

Eggplant
7" x 5" (17.8cm x 12.7cm)
Oil on Panel
$100 plus $10 shipping and handling in the US

My mind is blank in terms of saying anything about this painting specifically other than I like the little 'dent' just above the long highlight on the far right which is almost imperceptible. Eggplant is an ingredient in a favorite recipe. It consists of cut up zucchini, eggplant, onion, garlic, peppers and tomatoes. Saute everything in olive oil...tomatoes get sauteed separately. Put it all in a pot, simmer VERY slowly for a while and serve over your favorite pasta.

I haven't seen any of my 'daily painting' online buddies (a couple of hundred) paint a zucchini. Perhaps I will paint one soon and be the first. Why not zucchinis, I wonder? Now I'll be thinking about zucchinis and why no one has painted them...better than some of the other things I obsess about I suppose...

Today's Quotation: "Just as our taste in lovers is far more revealing than our choice of friends, the object of an artist's obsession can open up doors to their soul that might otherwise remain shut tight."

I found these wonderful models while strolling through our local farmers market. It was fun shuffling them around my studio table deciding on a composition. This painting was easier to complete than I had anticipated. I thought the details on the trailing roots would be difficult but it wasn't.

"Pear & Kumquats" by Marina Petro

Artist~Marina Petro, Saratoga Springs, NY USA
5x7 inches oil on Raymar canvas panel
$100 Email me to inquire about purchasing this painting.

I've been painting a lot of these small daily paintings on 6x6 inch canvas panels. They usually sell as is and I provide an adhesive hanger for them. They also look good displayed on mini easels which I can also provide. Problem is, even if I wanted to frame them I haven't been able to find any 6x6 inch frames locally to keep a few on hand. I do love this size though. The fruit and veggie paintings look really great displayed on kitchen/dining room walls in groupings.

I thought I'd finished this piece a couple of weeks ago. I kept looking at it and felt it needed something more...so...I lightened up the left side of the pear and the highlights on the kumquats, darkened parts of the background and deemed it done...and here it is...

Today's Quotation: "If we could but paint with the hand what we see with the eye."

6"x 6" original oil on Raymar canvas panel.

When I completed this painting, I saw the suggestion of angels in the light area of the painting. It appeared that they were being newly born and descending toward earth as I imagined it...I could use a few angels today...

Today's Quotation: "The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us and we see nothing but sand; the angels come to visit us, and we only know them when they are gone."

"Approaching Mars" by Marina Petro

"Approaching Mars"
24"x 36"
Original oil on stretched canvas
Email me to inquire about purchasing this painting.

I experimented a bit with this painting. First the background was painted in with a transparent gold ochre along with the darker indigo color which was applied primarily with a little solvent as the medium. Then I crumbled a paper towel and began blotting it. Afterward, while the background was still wet I painted in the clouds with white which picked up the underlying colors. I like the result and will probably try this again at some point. I'm thinking about making the planet a brighter shade of red. What do you think? Any comments?

Not much to say today. I'm in the midst of cooking (a miracle in itself). I bought a basket of root vegetables at the local farmers market. They had samples for people to taste and they were delicious...beets, carrots, potatoes, something else that looks like a white carrot...peel, cut them up and roast with olive oil, thyme, garlic and pepper...that's it.

This was a bit more complex than usual...it took a tremendous amount of concentration to 'keep my place' with the striped fabric. I am happy with the result, though.

"Camouflage II" by Marina Petro

"Camouflage II"
6"x 8" oil on Raymar canvas panel
SOLD

Another citrus painting on one of my favorite decorative fabrics. Painting these still life pieces has been such a joy as well as a tremendous learning experience. Prior to making the commitment to daily painting and producing these small works, most of what I painted was primarily from my imagination...such as yesterday's post. Quite a radical change...

Today's Quotation: "Without change, something sleeps inside us, and never wakens." -

"Healing Angel" by Marina Petro

"Healing Angel"
8"x 10" oil on canvas panel
$125
Sold

I have painted this theme before (angel in a garden) but I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. You will most likely see more of these down the road on occasion. There are a few themes that I could really get compulsive about. Actually, I thought the first larger one(Angel Descending-22"x28") I ever painted was awful but it sold immediately over 17 years ago and prints continue to sell to this day. You never know...

Here is the link to my current newsletter.

"The Messenger 11" by Marina Petro

"The Messenger 11"
24"x 30" Oil on canvas
Sold
This painting just flowed from my brush and was a delight to paint. No struggle here. I sometimes imagine that I am a bird, soaring above the earth and observing everything from that vantage point. I have been a bit ADD as you can see from the variety of paintings at my blog this month..(link below) The only consistency is that I have been painting. I've mentioned this before...I don't think I could ever settle into one style or general subject matter with my work. I fall in love visually (inner and outer vision) with too many things to be confined...and...I've been criticized for it...but I really don't care...so there...

Today's quotation: "There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost."

Now isn't this a cheerful piece? I'm happy with how this painting turned out. The background is a piece of quilting fabric.

Today's Quotation: "Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible."

"Lemon" by Marina Petro

"Lemon"
6"x 8" original oil on canvas panel
Email me to inquire about purchasing this piece.

I was fortunate to find lemon leaves at the local supermarket florist to use in this painting. We don't have any lemon trees here in upstate NY. I've been thinking about growing a lemon and orange tree indoors so I can have the 'real thing' handy. I saw a thriving orange tree at a local Chinese restaurant...

Here is another miniature painting. The minis are really 'cute' and fun to paint on occasion...especially when my time to paint has been compromised. I've included the miniature apple that I've posted before as well. The colors are almost identical and would make a nice pair displayed together.

"Magical Angel" by Marina Petro

"Magical Angel"
30" x 36"
Oil on stretched canvas
Email me to inquire about purchasing this piece.

Another angel painted spontaneously which took many sessions to complete. Initially I'd finished painting everything but the face which was totally black. One of my daughters commented that it was 'freaking her out.' It was a little scary just sitting there with no face but I hadn't decided whether I wanted to put a face on her...I'm glad I did though. The detail version of this picture looks a bit washed out in this photo...at least on my computer. The colors are actually much richer.

Today's Quotation: "Come to the edge." "We can't. We're afraid." "Come to the edge." "We can't. We will fall!" "Come to the edge." And they came. And he pushed them. And they flew.

"Evidence Of Angels" by Marina Petro

"Evidence Of Angels"
20"x 24"
Oil on stretched canvas
Email me to inquire about purchasing this piece.

This piece was painted a while ago. It is another spontaneous/intuitive painting that I began with keeping my mind as clear as I could and just beginning to paint...dipping my brush in the first color that comes to mind and going from there. The angels were an afterthought...it felt like something else was needed and, bingo...angels came to mind...

This is a painting I began quite some time ago, thought it was finished, but never fully comfortable with it so it sat here, patiently waiting to be completed. I finally made some minor tweaks in my painting class this week and now I'm happy with it.
