This painting was a bit of a challenge...actually, many of them are. When there is a considerable amount of black and white in a painting such as this, I have to wait a few days in between sessions for each of these slow drying colors to set enough to paint over them.

On another note....Did you know the hibiscus flower can universally mean that it is a nice summer? In Europe, during the Victorian era and up to today, the meaning of the hibiscus flower is "delicate beauty." It is the state flower of Hawaii and generally given to visiting state officials. It's symbolizes Old Royalty and is a flower that brings power and respect. In Japan, it's meaning is "gentle."

Besides the color combination, my favorite parts of this painting are the leaf, stem and very top of the pear. I would imagine that most artists have their favorite little sections. 

Did you know that in Christian symbolism, the pear symbolizes Christ's love for mankind? Neither did I until this morning when I did a search on 'pear symbolism' and the website for Symbols in Christian Art And Literature popped up...intriguing!

Pears have been cultivated and enjoyed for thousands of years. Homer referred to them as a "gift from the gods" in the Odyssey.

Cameras just cannot capture the subtleties of artwork. This one looks much better 'in person.' I have always been fascinated by the stark black and white patterned zebra. 

The zebra is said to represent individuality, grace, beauty, honesty and freedom. It is a power animal. The spiritual meaning behind the stripes has to do with the integration of opposites, thus enabling us to see the deeper truth....

This is one of my all time favorite little paintings. Pears have so much character...like no other fruit....at least I think so. They seem to exude qualities that other fruits don't. I've never heard anyone say, "What a cute or stately banana or pineapple, or whatever..."

Another happy moment..... finding a pear with it's leaf still intact...and... willing to sit still for me, without complaining too much... over a couple of days while I painted it.

Another beautiful background fabric 'find' to showcase this red pear. This painting was a bit complex and took several sessions to complete and  I am very happy with the result.

I love this painting and the pattern of the fabric. It cheers me up when I look at it. The pear looks pretty happy too. I will be getting around to painting more still life pieces with this fabric and hopefully finding some others that strike me this strongly. Lemons and oranges might be the next models...

"Apple and  Pear" was painted fairly smoothly without many difficult areas. Perhaps I am getting better at all this!!?? My current horse portrait is still on the easel impatiently waiting for me to finish him. I haven't been in the mood to over-use my poor, tired, analytical left brain....so....I started another spontaneous  celestial-skyscape painting...at least that's what it looks like at the moment and what I am going to get back to working on right now....

It was a happy day when I found this piece of decorative paper at a nearby shop to use as the background for my golden pear. I love the gold against the violet. The light pink flowers are actually pure white on the paper but they looked too stark when I painted them white, so I added some warm pink to tone them down a bit. I thought this painting would be a 'snap' to complete but it was more complicated than I'd anticipated. That happens a lot...more than I'd like...easy is just plain good sometimes...

I love working with bright, clear color and was very happy to find this swatch of whimsical fabric to pose my red pears on.

I had a surprise request from my granddaughter, Dominique, to spend the night with me yesterday. She's been working very hard creating her beautiful hemp beaded jewelry and listing it all at her Etsy Shop. Being an impatient 17 year old, she hadn't included some of the details that I thought were important to present her jewelry online....so.....we spent the night (me until 11:30 pm and Dominique until 3am) revising every one of her listings. I like the shot of color the pear provides against the dramatic black and white zebra skin pattern. Life has been a series of 'situations' for myself and studio mates at 79 Beekman Street in Saratoga. We've finally been able to come up with a schedule for staying open at least for the racing/tourist season  for the month of August. Our studio hours are 10-7. I am planning to be there most days from 12:30 - 4. If you are in the area, stop in for a visual treat. Beekman Street is so beautiful in the summer with flowers lining the streets of the shops and galleries.
