Approaching Mars, Original Abstract Art, Outer Space, Celestial Oil Painting by Marina Petro

©Marina Petro

"APPROACHING MARS"

24 x 36  inches
Original oil painting on stretched canvas

$950

Only one in the entire universe...and it could be yours!
Certificate Of Authenticity provided with every original painting.

I painted "Approaching Mars" from my imagination. Initially I had nothing in mind...just began to dip my brush in the colors I was attracted to, one by one, until it was completed.

In 2014 "Approaching Mars" was used for the cover of "Gulliver Of Mars" by Edwin Arnold, a book originally published in 1905 and reprinted in 2014 by  Bottom Of The Hill Publishing. Quite an honor!

APPROACHING MARS, Original Oil Painting by Marina Petro Used To Illustrate The Book "Gulliver Of Mars"

What an honor it was to have my painting "APPROACHING MARS" chosen to grace the cover of the often reprinted book "Gulliver Of Mars." This is the second time Bottom Of the Hill Publishing has licensed one of my paintings for their book covers. Scroll down to see the full painting.

"Gulliver Of Mars" (where I originated- Mars that is...) can be purchased by ordering it through any bookstore. All you'll need is the title and the publisher's name which is BOTTOM OF THE HILL PUBLISHING.

I realize the print on the book jacket is too small to read so I have typed the content just below here.....

From the back cover:
Edwin Lester Arnold (1857-1935) was an English author and son of the noted poet, journalist, Orientalist and author, Sir Edwin Arnold. Edwin Lester Arnold's first book was The Wonderful Adventures of Phra the Phoenician. However, even greater notoriety was to come.

Arnold was greatly impacted by Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and was so taken by that book that he adapted that name to the hero of his final novel, Gulliver of Mars. The book was originally published in 1905, and was Arnold's last work of fiction because its initial reception was somewhat lukewarm. However it is believed that one individual…Edgar Rice Burroughs…was so impressed by the book that it inspired him to write his Barsoom series.

The concept of Gulliver of Mars is unusual in that Gulliver Jones, while brave and clever, doesn't win every battle nor does he win the Martian Princess. The ending of the book will, however, surprise and hopefully please you.

Gulliver of Mars by Edwin Lester Arnold is a book that should be read by every Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. When you turn the last page we believe that you'll agree.

I thought I'd already found all my little lost paintings that were making an attempt to stay hidden and close to home. Here is another one I just discovered while making a feeble attempt to reorganize my studio a bit the other day. I also discovered a frame that fit perfectly.

So, here's another peek into what happens when I simply begin to paint with nothing in mind...brush to paint to canvas....always spontaneously. I have so many  ideas with regard to how I want to proceed with my paintings. The frustrating part is there's only one of me...

Here is another celestial painting that was completed a while back and didn't post here. I can barely see the planet Mars because the red sphere isn't showing up in this photo too well. It is not a bright red but brighter than what is depicted here. This painting just flowed from my brush...it was a great pleasure to paint and very freeing.

I thoroughly enjoy painting celestial landscapes...a very freeing painting experience. My brush just seems to flow from paint to canvas without much thought...and...mistakes are easily smushed out and painted over...

I've updated my "Daily Painting" portfolio of available daily paintings and created a book at Blurb.Com. PREVIEW the entire book here.

I'm also in the process of producing a book of all my angel paintings with inspirational quotations. I'll keep you posted...

I experimented a bit with this painting. First the background was painted in with a transparent gold ochre along with the darker indigo color which was applied primarily with a little solvent as the medium. Then I crumbled a paper towel and began blotting it. Afterward, while the background was still wet I painted in the clouds with white which picked up the underlying colors. I like the result and will probably try this again at some point. I'm thinking about making the planet a brighter shade of red. What do you think? Any comments?

"DESTINATION MARS" by Marina Petro

"Destination Mars"
5x7 inches
$99 + shipping
Original oil painting on Gessobord
Purchase at my ebay store or email me for other purchasing options
Here is another painting from my imagination. It flowed fairly well...no big struggle here. The biggest struggle was with naming it. I kept coming up with titles I'd already used with prior cosmic landscapes....then I recalled a newscast reporting the discovery of possible water on Mars, soil that has similarities to ours and the possibility of life.

The quote below reflects one of the reasons I keep painting...

Today's Quote: "Everything that is new or uncommon raises a pleasure in the imagination, because it fills the soul with an agreeable surprise, gratifies its curiosity, and gives it an idea of which it was not before possessed."
-Joseph Addison
