This is one of the rare acrylic paintings I've created. I began with a base of iridescent copper paint, allowed it to dry and then, as usual with my celestial creations, began to paint spontaneously.   The photo does not do this piece justice. I'm happy with how it turned out. Here's another painting that would be magnificent on a very large canvas....one of these days I will actually do it and stop talking about it...

Today's Quotation: "A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul."

Oh, how painting this horse series is re-awakening my childhood obsession with horses.  The closest I got to them was waiting for the summer carnival to set up on the lot down the street where I grew up in Astoria, New York so I could ride the carousel which we called the Merry-Go-Round way back when. I only got to ride once a day. I could have continued all night if left to my own devices. I remember listening to The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, and other western shows on the radio (no TV then) ...hearing the horses hooves as they galloped and fantasizing I was riding through the plains with them...what freedom! My life's ambition was to be a cowgirl.

Now, here's the deal with Moonsilver.....
I was in the midst of painting 'White Magic' (photo just below) when my young, 12 year old friend, Emily Heck, came into the studio with her mother, Leslie. Emily had suggested the title "Firebird" for one of my phoenix rising paintings in the past and I immediately changed the title I'd given it. I liked hers much better.

Emily suggested "Moonsilver,"  after the name of a unicorn in the book she was reading with the same title, by Kathleen Duey. I loved the name but I'd already put a gold color base coat on the canvas and it was beginning to glow a beautiful golden color through the white of the horse. When they left, I decided to create a painting that would fit the title Moonsilver and that's how Moonsilver was born.  Thank you Emily!

Today's Quotation: "The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire."

Here is the newest addition to my expanding stable of horses. I am experiencing less and less resistance and getting to love painting them. Each one is such a surprise when it's completed. Most of the photographs I used for reference had landscapes and fences behind the horse. I decided to create my own backgrounds...that's part of the surprise element. The most resistance I encountered was painting the eyes and the mane...especially the mane. Turns out it feels very natural and they have been flowing from my brush relatively effortlessly...all things considered....

Today's Quotation:  "Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation."

Only one in the entire universe! .....and it could be yours....

This painting was created intuitively/spontaneously from my very fertile imagination. Once again, I simply began by dipping my brush into the color that attracted me most at the moment and continued to do so until the painting was completed. Wish I was in this garden drinking up the sky right now...

Today's Quotation:  "Art is both the taking and giving of beauty; the turning out to the light the inner folds of the awareness of the spirit. It is the recreation on another plane of the realities of the world; the tragic and wonderful realities of earth and men, and of all the inter-relations of these."

"Seer" is my second equine portrait. I'd posted a picture of this horse in progress some time ago. I'd been experiencing resistance, feeling intimidated, and kept putting off working on it.  I am very happy with the finished painting though.  The actual photo I used for reference had a background of trees and a fence...kind of boring.  I hadn't decided what to paint for the background so I just started choosing the colors that attracted me most and swishing them on the canvas....not a surprise that a sky scene emerged. They seem to appear very naturally through my brush.

Not sure how your monitor is displaying this painting. I brought it into Photoshop and it matched the original painting perfectly, but seeing it now on this blog post, it appears a bit darker...but you get the idea...I love imagining I am riding this wild horse bareback with his mane swishing across my face...not a chance in real life but great as a fantasy!

Today's Quotation: In riding a horse, we borrow freedom.

I am thoroughly enjoying painting these larger still life pieces. The fabric I used to showcase the orange was a rare find. It hasn't been easy finding fabric patterns I am attracted to of late. This piece is getting quite a bit of attention at my studio in Saratoga.
