I thoroughly enjoy painting these larger still life pieces and will most likely be painting quite a few more  now. I particularly like the background on this one and, if I don't curtail my obsessive leanings, would just use this fabric for the next few...but, I will opt for variety now...

I brought new paintings to the Flores Gallery I am associated with in Saratoga Springs, NY. Frankie Flores, the owner, suggested I continue to paint a bunch of these larger still lives as they are the ones getting a lot of attention and oohh's and aahh's...

I'm rather at a loss for much to say about this little cherry painting which I really like. Wish I had some chocolate to dip them in when the painting was finished.

Are any of you interested in experiencing what some refer to as 'mind over matter'? If so, close your eyes, take in a deep breath, and imagine you are biting into one of these very tart red cherries....Did you salivate a bit?  That's mind over matter....

Today's Quotation:  “I think that there are those who write of life being a skip on the sidewalk, a chocolate bar, a bowl of cherries... the problem with that is it ends up disappointing people. Because life is more like being on the tube in London; you never really know what could happen! But then there are those people who bring a box of chocolates to eat on the tube...so life, it isn't a skip on the sidewalk, but it is a matter of strength: "Can I bring my bowl of cherries to feast on while I stand here in the gutter?" that's the essence of life. Can you still put on your rose-colored glasses while your eyes are filled with tears, and see everything in rosy colors? That's the strength that fuels a true life. Can you think to bring your little box of chocolates with you while you sit on the tube running under the streets of London? Because you should. Because even if you don't know anybody, and you don't know what's gonna happen next, you should have your box of chocolates with you. You should eat your bowl of cherries. And that is what life is.”

My First Oil Painting, "Still Life Fruit Painting" by Marina Petro

I've posted this bit of nostalgia before but felt like I wanted to share it again.
I wonder whether I would have discovered oil painting or painting at all if my mother hadn't followed her intuition...

My First Oil Painting
12" x 16"
Still life oil painting on canvas board, by Marina Petro

Only one in the entire universe, but you can't have it...

Once upon a time, when I was 14 years old, my mother bought me one of those large paperback step-by-step oil painting books and a set of basic oil paints. She must have been  following her intuition because I don't recall expressing an interest in oil painting. Up to that point, I was fooling around with charcoal portraits. Boy do I wish I had those to show you now. I think I threw them out or lost them in one of my many moves...gypsy that I was.  They were excellent if I must say so myself.

This still life is my first attempt at oil painting. When it was completed, I placed it, still wet, on a chair and my father promptly sat on it. I left the painting as is but his slacks went into the trash.

I've had it stashed in my storage room upstairs. I am probably not going to give it a title, but if one pops into your mind, I'd like to know....I might change my mind. I plan to give it to my 18 year old granddaughter as a symbol of persistence in developing innate talents....as I continue to persist in developing my innate talents...

I am recalling the years when my 3 daughters were little....We lived in a small apartment in Flushing, NY. I would set up my canvas and paints on the kitchen table between meals and paint when I could.  There was no other place available and nowhere I could leave my equipment set up. Anyway, I thought I'd share a bit of my history and nostalgia with you today....

Today's Quotation: "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

"Apple and Plum" is the second painting of the three I recently discovered that weren't posted here. The more I look at it the more I like it. Funny how perceptions change as time passes. It was an experiment in painting 'looser' than I had tried with my small still life pieces. The larger apple in the foreground also lends itself to a more interesting composition...at least I think so...

Well, those of you who have been following my blog must know how happy I was to have found this sweet clementine orange with leaves attached. As usual, I stood by the bin they were in, picking them up one at a time to find the one with the most interesting leaves....and here she is...

I am still struggling to reorganize my home studio after bringing all my paintings and equipment back from the Beekman Street Studio....and....attempting to keep everything neat and orderly until my house sells. I haven't been painting since I left Beekman Street but will resume as soon as I am more settled. I have to admit, I've been procrastinating considerably...
