The original painting, "The Phoenix Rising" was a large (30" x 40") original oil painting on canvas and was purchased by a very happy collector. The Phoenix Rising is yet another example of allowing one's creative intuition to lead the way...moment to moment, brain to hand, hand to paint, paint to canvas, and on and on....

The beauty and power of the Phoenix Rising is depicted in this painting. In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix is a beautiful bird that lives for 500 years. It builds its own funeral pyre with wood and spices, sets itself on fire and rises reborn again from the ashes more beautiful than ever to live for another 500 years. The Phoenix Rising is a symbol for resurrection, immortality, triumph over adversity and the indomitable power of the human spirit. 

I painted this phoenix toward the end of a long period of illness in the early 1990's. My energy and sense of well being miraculously began to return upon it's completion.

This image has been published on a wine bottle collection, CD music covers and in a national spiritual publication.

PHOENIX RISING 1 was painted quite a few years ago. The original painting was 24" x 48" and  sold some time ago. It is still being enjoyed by a very happy collector. 

This powerful rendition of  The Phoenix Rising was painted spontaneously from my imagination.

In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix is a beautiful bird that lives for 500 years. Well this is one bird that didn't want to be photographed by my trusty Canon. I've tried photographing her many times in a variety of lighting situations but every time, her face was washed out. I finally had her professionally photographed. She is currently hanging out with my other creations at my studio/gallery at 79 Beekman Street in Saratoga Springs, NY. If you are in the area, stop in and say hello. She's been getting a LOT of attention there. 

I can't see what you see on your monitors. On mine, she looks a little dark but I am hesitant to make any color changes. 

Firebird is another Phoenix Rising that was born from my imagination. It is not a new painting. I've had yet another phoenix in the recesses of my mind which is the most powerful depiction of all. I have avoided making an attempt to paint it. I suppose I will when the spirit moves me and the time is right.

 Firebird is getting quite a bit of attention at my downtown studio of late. She had been hiding in my country studio for some time and reluctantly agreed to go on exhibit only twice. So, she's in full view now. If you're around the Arts District in Saratoga Springs some afternoon, stop in and visit. 

The photo above does not do justice to Firebird. I've tried photographing her many times. It's rare that I can't get a good representation of the original painting. I'll be taking her to visit a professional photographer soon...hopefully he will be able to capture her elusive beauty.

The Roman poet Ovid wrote the following about the phoenix:
Most beings spring from other individuals; but there is a certain kind which reproduces itself. The Assyrians call it the Phoenix. It does not live on fruit or flowers, but on frankincense and odoriferous gums. When it has lived five hundred years, it builds itself a nest in the branches of an oak, or on the top of a palm tree. In this it collects cinnamon, and spikenard, and myrrh, and of these materials builds a pile on which it deposits itself, and dying, breathes out its last breath amidst odors. From the body of the parent bird, a young Phoenix issues forth, destined to live as long a life as its predecessor.
