I just completed this painting and it was still on my easel when I asked my daughter, Joy, if she would 'studio sit' for me that evening and greet visitors. While she was sitting in front of the canvas, she said she had a sense that the horse was behind her whispering in her ear....This is what she heard........I have recorded these words on the back of the original painting....

Never said goodbye
Till next time
Will miss you
Hush
I heard you
Whisper

I am very happy with this painting. It lifts my spirit whenever I view it...

The horse was introduced to this continent by the Spanish, transforming this continent by providing its inhabitants with a freedom of movement and travel no other animal could provide. They pulled wagons and provided a speedy form of travel for the Natives. Because of the horse these people were now able to travel great distances along with their belongings.

Pegasus, Centaur and Unicorn are forms horses have taken throughout mythology. These magical creatures can see the essence of a man's soul. Once wild horses were in the millions, currently there are only a few hundred herds left. They were pushed off the land by humans and hunted for domestication. Despite domestication, their strong love of freedom has kept their spirit alive.

I'm really enjoying painting these horses. They seem to come to life as I work on them. I was going to title this one 'Black Magic' but Edie,  one of my painting buddies, who was there when I'd completed it called him 'Thunder' so I decided on 'Black Thunder.' She kept blowing him kisses as she was leaving the studio...

I haven't been posting as often as I would like to. A recent decision made to put my beautiful country home on the market for sale is taking up quite a bit of my time. Between trying to get to my studio in town and orchestrating work needing to be done at the house....I'm on overload. But...I do have another horse coming to life on canvas that is in process...

Today's Quotation: I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest -- and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man."
Proverbs 24:30-34

Oh, how painting this horse series is re-awakening my childhood obsession with horses.  The closest I got to them was waiting for the summer carnival to set up on the lot down the street where I grew up in Astoria, New York so I could ride the carousel which we called the Merry-Go-Round way back when. I only got to ride once a day. I could have continued all night if left to my own devices. I remember listening to The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, and other western shows on the radio (no TV then) ...hearing the horses hooves as they galloped and fantasizing I was riding through the plains with them...what freedom! My life's ambition was to be a cowgirl.

Now, here's the deal with Moonsilver.....
I was in the midst of painting 'White Magic' (photo just below) when my young, 12 year old friend, Emily Heck, came into the studio with her mother, Leslie. Emily had suggested the title "Firebird" for one of my phoenix rising paintings in the past and I immediately changed the title I'd given it. I liked hers much better.

Emily suggested "Moonsilver,"  after the name of a unicorn in the book she was reading with the same title, by Kathleen Duey. I loved the name but I'd already put a gold color base coat on the canvas and it was beginning to glow a beautiful golden color through the white of the horse. When they left, I decided to create a painting that would fit the title Moonsilver and that's how Moonsilver was born.  Thank you Emily!

Today's Quotation: "The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire."

Here is the newest addition to my expanding stable of horses. I am experiencing less and less resistance and getting to love painting them. Each one is such a surprise when it's completed. Most of the photographs I used for reference had landscapes and fences behind the horse. I decided to create my own backgrounds...that's part of the surprise element. The most resistance I encountered was painting the eyes and the mane...especially the mane. Turns out it feels very natural and they have been flowing from my brush relatively effortlessly...all things considered....

Today's Quotation:  "Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation."
