"Charlton Pond" was painted on the most beautiful autumn day at the edge of a small pond in West Charlton, NY...just down the road from my friend Debbie's house who was also there painting with me. We had driven around the area for quite some time before choosing this location.

There were many other beautiful spots I would have loved to paint but...the reality with plein air painting is that if there's no where to park your car along the road and a small flat area to set up an easel, you are out of luck.

Today's Quotation:  Do it no matter what. If you believe in it, it is something very honorable. If somebody around you or your family does not understand it, then that's their problem. But if you do have a passion, an honest passion, just do it.

This is what I completed on day two of the plein air painting workshop I attended with Harry Orlyk. It was a three day (afternoon) event. You won't be seeing the result of day three because I  messed it up really bad and I am quite annoyed with myself and my innate tendency to be impatient.  I was quite tired by the time we actually got to painting. Late afternoon is not my best time. I am a very early riser and usually 'crash' and need a nap most afternoons. I was impatient in deciding what I was going to paint, didn't analyze the elements of the landscape the way I should have, ignored that my canvas was in the dark,  and on and on with a myriad of excuses...so there it is...

I did go out painting the beautiful autumn landscape with my friend Debbie yesterday and will post the painting in a day or two. I am happy with it...stay tuned...

Today's Quotation: "If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

This is an older painting I completed a few years ago. It was painted Plein Air at the Saratoga Battlefield in Saratoga, NY on a very chilly, windy and overcast day. As much as I enjoy the experience of painting outdoors, I have a difficult time packing all the gear necessary, carrying it around and dealing with bugs, the elements, and invariably an aching back after a while.... Maybe in my next life...

Sunday morning,  the second day of my Annual Open Studio, K. Madison Moore, a good friend of mine and exceptional painter who lives way over in Pennsylvania emailed me with the link to a very wonderful newspaper feature about me that was published in my local newspaper that morning. What a surprise! Click SARATOGA ARTICLE to read it.

This lone tree was painted plein air at the Saratoga Battlefield. I am ambivalent about plein air painting. There's certainly the exciting spontaneity that is natural with painting outdoors (at least for me) but...packing up and dragging all my equipment to a location is a real drag...and exhausting. Hence, I don't do much of it. I do like how this painting turned out though. I'll post another I did at a nearby location in the battlefield next.

Today's Quotation: "Your work is to discover your work - and then with all your heart to give yourself to it."

"POPPY PATCH" by Marina Petro

"Poppy Patch"
22x28 oil on canvas
email me to purchase-link is below

This painting was done partially plein air and completed from memory and imagination. It was inspired by a scene along RT 372 near Cambridge, NY. I took an early morning drive along this same road the other morning. I was intending to snap some photos of the beautiful countryside. I got a few but some of the best scenes were almost impossible to take because the two lane road was so narrow and it wouldn't have been safe with cars coming in both directions.

Daily Quotation: "The imagination is a powerful tool. An artist can use it to show others the world as he sees it and to bring others into his dream of what the world could be."

"THE PATH" by Marina Petro

"The Path"
12x16 inch
Oil on stretched canvas
$275
Email me to purchase (link below)

Here is the final painting in the series of three which were painted at Saratoga National Battlefield. I especially like the way the path leads into the sky. They look wonderful together on my wall as a set, but I sure would like to see them on someone else's wall to be enjoyed.

"Daily Quotation" The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."
-Aristotle
