A couple of weeks ago I received an email with a photo of a seascape painting from friends who purchased it at a second hand shop. They were wondering whether  I painted it. The painting was signed Marina Petro. It was obviously old and a bit damaged with a few scratches. I did not remember painting it but thought it was beautiful. 

I asked my friend to take a better picture of the signature and send it to me because I had no recollection of painting this piece (still don’t).  Imagine my surprise when I saw the signature and realized in fact, it was one of mine.

My daughters remembered the painting and mentioned that I created it after a vacation with them  at the Rockport/ Gloucester, Massachusetts sea shore.

I’ve agreed to ‘patch it up’ and return it to its new parents.

Another exploration with painting miniatures and acrylic paint. I am primarily an oil painter but enjoy diverting from the familiar at times. 

Red Moon Rising is actually much more beautiful in person. It is quite difficult photographing these miniature works of art. The canvas texture is rougher in the photograph and the photo doesn't show the subtle changes in the blending of colors.

"Tempest" Wish I could find the trick that would display the photos of these miniatures accurately. I scan them. Scanning is the most accurate way to capture color and other properties, but not with these little gems. The originals are much more beautiful. Most of these miniatures have been created from my imagination. I might try my hand at painting larger versions of them at some point...

"Red Moon" is another addition to my current series of miniature paintings using Golden Fluid Acrylic paint. I must say it is quite a contrast using these fluid acrylics to oil paint. I prefer oil paint but am stubbornly satisfying my curiosity with these. They do have their benefits...one of which is I don't have to wait very long to paint over a section if need be as they dry very quickly....and....I have another idea for their perfect use which is currently a secret...I will unveil it if my interest in it continues...

This painting was created from my imagination as I attempt to get my mojo back from wherever it is hiding in the shadows. If I never get it back, that's ok too...I'll just keep painting without it regardless.

"Oceanscape" is another miniature painting from my ever fertile, over active imagination. Have I moved through my 'painting funk' yet? No...but I am doing my best. This piece too, as well as all the other miniatures looks much better in person due to the canvas texture in the scanned photo making the texture appear much larger and rougher than it actually is....weird...

Up until the second I uploaded the photo of "Cosmic Heat" to post here, I was seeing it as a celestial painting. I looked at it just now, and all of a sudden, I saw it as a seascape with a full moon. Now I can't decide, nor do I want to, whether it is a skyscape or a seascape...It is whatever you want it to be.

Whoever said you can't have it both ways?

"SUNSET" is the sixth in the series of  miniature works. "Garden Of Light"  which was posted yesterday sold quickly to a very happy collector. I am thankful once again!

It is very strange that these little ones don't photograph as well as larger paintings. They are truly more beautiful in person. This one doesn't show the subtle changes between the orange and red colors in the sky or the glow around the sun and horizon...oh well, I've done my best.

This painting was created from a photograph taken at Ocean Beach, New Jersey. Wish I was there at the moment. Can you smell the ocean? Feel the wind? I can...Some of my earliest and happiest memories were when I was at the beach with my parents. We rotated between Rockaway Beach and Jones Beach on Long Island, NY. I loved riding the waves.

My mother used to make ham and american cheese sandwiches which tasted like heaven after a vigorous workout in the waves. I haven't had white bread, ham or american cheese in many moons. White bread because it is white bread and not whole grain....ham, because of the salt content and processing, and american cheese because of the processing. BUT...I will make it a point to eat one occasionally from now on...

This mystical seascape with the full moon appearing like a sentinel, was painted from my imagination. As most of my intuitive/spontaneous works go, I didn't have a subject matter in mind when I began. I put paints out I felt attracted to that day and began to paint from my spirit. At a certain point, I wasn't sure whether this piece would be a celestial scene or a seascape. The more I painted, the more it began looking like a seascape and I went from there. I am happy with the final outcome.

"Tidal Moon" was painted (spontaneously) a while back. When I first began the painting, I thought it was going to end up being a skyscape! Much to my surprise, it evolved into a seascape. There is such adventure in painting intuitively...you never know what will happen next.

This is where I would love to be at the moment. We had our first 1/2" of snow today. I know it's not much but seeing it covering the ground kind of shocked me into the reality that summer is over and winter is on its way. I will visualize myself walking along this beach as I fall off to sleep tonight....

Now wouldn't you like to be here right now? I would. It might look stormy, but that will pass. There's not a hint of snow...It's been frigid here in the Northeast and I just heard we are expecting more snow. I am happy with this painting. "Tidal Moon" was painted spontaneously straight from my imagination. It was painted a while ago. I re-painted a few areas last week, signed it, and am now happy with it.

Now, about the contest. Many thanks to all who participated. There really wasn't a true winner because I am still keeping the title "Autumn Mist" at least for now. But...my dear friend and subscriber, Valerie Borfitz came the closest to it so she wins the print. Here's a partial excerpt of what she submitted.

"Regarding Autumn Mist - the setting happens to be an autumn landscape, but that is most relevant because it helps to evoke the eeriness and mystery of the scene. Autumn creates a dynamic landscape that is bare except for the beautiful leaves that create a blanket over the seeds and roots of next years potential growth. It is the time of tremendous change, with a hint of death and other things hidden. The mist conveys similiar feelings of change, and the unknown.

Mist always seems to me to be other-worldly (especially when I am alone in the woods), and I feel the presence of more than what clearly meets the eye. Like the mists I have experienced, your painting feels magical, a little bit scarey, and full of promise of the discovery of something unknown. I would think to name the painting "Mist(y) Presence", or something like that. It is a very wonderful painting, and I would be happy to buy a print of it!!
