Are you smiling? That's the usual reaction when someone sees this painting. The scarecrows I used for models are quite rare. I've only seen them once at Basketworld and then they were gone... and...Basketworld went out of business shortly afterward. I have one tucked away in my garage for future paintings.

Today's Quotation: "Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong."

I remember the first stroke I placed on the canvas with "Karmic Lovers." It was the large red heart in the middle of the painting. I didn't know it was going to be a heart when I dipped my brush into the red paint, which was the color I was most attracted to,  and moved toward the canvas. As I've mentioned in prior posts, I keep my mind as clear of images and pre-conceived ideas as possible when I paint these pieces. This one was originally titled...Number 26...

Today's Quotation: "It is better by noble boldness to run the risk of being subject to half the evils we anticipate than to remain in cowardly listlessness for fear of what might happen."

When I finished this painting, I realized that I'd painted a coffin/sarcophagus with a figure in it. The figure on the left, in the middle, appeared to be grieving. A short time later, my mother passed away....always a surprise with these intuitive/spontaneously created paintings from "My Zone"...

Today's Quotation: "Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck."

Here is another ultra-original Painting From "The Zone" Series. When I began this series, I found it almost impossible to come up with titles for these works...so....I numbered them. This one was originally Number 17. It is only recently that I forced myself to come up with titles for a variety of reasons, mostly practical. For the life of me I couldn't associate the numbers with the paintings and it became frustrating.

What would you have named this one?

Today's Quotation: "Painting requires the bravery of solitude. Painting requires disciplined labor. To be a painter is to search the world with a benevolent eye for every subtle beauty that the infinite world offers."
-Charles Philip Brooks

"Captive Angel" is the twelfth piece I completed in this series which are painted moment to moment with no forethought. What a surprise this one was! What makes these paintings so exciting is that I would never have thought of this composition or images. It could only be painted spontaneously with my mind disciplined and attempting to keep it free of images....

Today's Quotation: "Intuition is the subliminal sense that Spirit endowed us with to maneuver safely through the maze that is real life."

I have to say this is one of my favorite paintings. I didn't even get a chance to keep it around the studio for very long as the original sold almost immediately. This was a difficult painting to complete but I am very happy with the result. The reflections on the bowl were quite a challenge and my eyes kept blurring trying to strain and see accurately. There were a few times I wanted to give up on it but flashed ahead and realized I would regret doing so...so...I just kept going...and going...and going...

I was invited to submit an article to "Saratoga Life" magazine in Saratoga Springs, NY. I was able to scan the article and create a link to my website. You can read it here:

Today's Quotation:  "Painters often seem to be involved in a great struggle with those things they have the greatest difficulty mastering... It is as though the artist is always working a little bit beyond his area of competence, stubbornly doing what is to some degree impossible."
-Alan Feltus

Can you imagine what it must be like living in my brain?

This is artwork from my Paintings From "The Zone" Series. A series of 29 paintings, thus far, which were created moment to moment without any forethought. I consider these paintings Ultra Original works of art.

When I begin these From The 'Zone' paintings, it is with the intention of keeping my mind as clear and free of any preconceived ideas and just dip my brush into the first color that attracts me and follow the movement from brain to hand to canvas or paper. The results are always a complete surprise.

The first 9 of these paintings were painted with tempera paint on 22" x 28" sheets of paper and are not for sale. The remainding 20 were painted primarily with acrylic and occasionally gouache on canvas. I will be posting selections from the series over the next few weeks.

Here is another painting straight from my never resting imagination. I would love to be walking toward this landscape at the moment with my painting gear, anticipating capturing the drama of the sky and the inviting field of flowers...wondering what lies just beyond the flowers....

But...instead...I am sitting at my computer posting this painting and right after I do I will make my Nutri Bullet drink of vegetables and fruit and get on with continuing to set up my website at ARTSPAN
This is how far I've gotten with it. I'm open to suggestions so feel free to email me...

The inspiration for this painting is a scene I pass almost daily on my drive into the city of Saratoga Springs, NY. I live just outside of the busier part of town in the beautiful countryside.

Here is another creation from one of my past journeys out into the heavens. It is an older work. It was painted spontaneously/intuitively, moment to moment. Did I know it was going to turn out to be an abstract painting? No...I never know what the end result will be when I begin painting in this fashion. That's the exciting part....not knowing and then being surprised at its completion.

When the painting was completed and I was contemplating it, the impression I received was the 'Creation'....I also see a bird or white dove coming forth from the center of the painting. For me, it depicts the 'Holy Spirit.'

Today's Quotation: "As a suffering creature, I cannot do without something greater than I---something that is my life--the power to create."
-Vincent Van Gogh

"Reaching For The Light" is actually a 'paint-over' of a piece I began painting outdoors last autumn and decided I wasn't satisfied with when I brought it back to my studio. There is a bit of texture from the original painting underneath that adds to it's interest.

Today's Quotation: "God is the name by which I designate all things which cross my path violently and recklessly, all things which alter my plans and intentions, and change the course of my life, for better or for worse."
-Carl Jung

"Shaman's Dream" was painted intuitively with no preconceived idea or plan. It is very exciting/revealing to paint in this manner. When you have nothing at all in mind, everything is a surprise and reveals some of the subconscious content lurking within. Click on the image or the link that says 'At This Link' for a larger view of the painting. The face in the lower left corner just appeared! I was not intending to paint a face, or the partial red phoenix in the center, or the red angel toward the upper left.

I began the painting with Burnt Umber on the white canvas and just kept quickly painting so as not to slow down and think about creating anything specific. That kept up for a while and when I stepped back, these images were present...just waiting for me to continue to finish with the addition of color.

Today's Quotation: "Every moment there is news coming out of silence."
-Ranier Maria Rilke

This painting was originally created under the direction of my beloved teacher, Tom Vincent who died a few years ago....and one of the more challenging paintings I've attempted. I learned much from this one piece. If you could see the original, the petals of the lillies actually glow from within. If you'd like to see it and are in or around Saratoga Hospital, it is being displayed as part of their permanent art collection in the new Orthopedic wing, along with three more of my floral paintings.

The inspiration for this painting was a photograph my daughter, Andrea, took of the lily pond at the Yaddo Artist's Retreat in Saratoga Springs, NY

Did you notice the little pink heart toward the bottom of the painting? It was truly captured in Andrea's photograph...magical!

Today's Quotation: When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and I could say, "I used everything that you gave me."

This is one of my all time favorite little paintings. Pears have so much character...like no other fruit....at least I think so. They seem to exude qualities that other fruits don't. I've never heard anyone say, "What a cute or stately banana or pineapple, or whatever..."

Today's Quotation: “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

This is one of my favorite smaller paintings. I thought it was going to be fairly easy to paint, however, it turned out to be quite difficult. As I look at it now, I am considering painting a much larger version in a square format...hhmm...Often the larger paintings are easier. I am presently working on a large 20 x 20 still life with plums and beautiful lillies...perhaps when that one is finished....

Today's Quotation: "I do not pursue art. It pursues me. It dogs me throughout my day and never rests. It is the beast I must feed that is never content. I did not choose to be an artist, to create, to express what is in my head. It chose me and I am its slave."
~Toni Ciserella
