I'm hoping to get back into the swing of it soon and begin painting more horses. I discovered two beautiful Haflinger horses that hang out together on my way into town. I contacted the owner and got permission to photograph and paint them. I am planning to bring my 18 year old granddaughter with me for the first shoot (hopefully very soon)...and will go from there. I've been a bit 'under the weather' for a couple of weeks battling the tenacious nasty little bronchial bug that has been going around. From what I understand, it has been hanging on with most for about 3 or more weeks...

At the moment, I have a new plein air painting I am still ambivalent about posting...not sure whether I like it or not...., a large and quite difficult still life painting on my easel that I'm making snail's pace  progress with,  and a black horse portrait that needs to be finished....

I was delighted to receive permission from Hessel's owner to paint him. I have fallen in love with this horse. He is currently residing at the Blackshire Equestrian Centre in Randolph, MN. Hessel is a Friesian Stallion with an impressive bloodline and disposition, who is now over 17 hands. They refer to him as the 'Gentle Giant.'You can read more about this magnificent horse and watch a great video here: http://www.blackshireequestrian.com/  I've posted this painting a few months ago here if he is looking familiar to you...

I've been 'under the weather' with a nasty bronchial thing going around these parts for the past two weeks. It has been difficult to paint with any consistency, although I did (almost) finish another plein air painting yesterday....a view of the autumn landscape from my deck. Sitting outside and getting cold probably didn't help any...I'll be posting it soon...

Plowed Cornfield is the result of another plein air painting excursion with my friend Debbie. It was a chilly, cloudy, but beautiful autumn day at the edge of a recently plowed cornfield in Charlton, NY.  We'd driven around for quite a while trying to find a location that appealed to both of us. In the process, we found a great spot in an open field across from a private home. The homeowner happened to be raking leaves outside. We asked permission to set up our easels at the side of the road down a bit across from her home and she refused us!!!

Earlier, we were chased away from another  beautiful open field by a young woman on horseback....not even the owner.  One of the ridiculous reasons she gave us was that hunting season had just begun...duh...so what are you doing there on horseback? I would have put up more of an argument but decided it wasn't worth it. So, weary and concerned that it would get too late to paint and my late afternoon 'crash' would occur, we decided on this view just across the street from Debbie's home. I am happy with the result. It has a lot of great texture.

This painting happens to look much better 'in person.' For some reason, I just couldn't photograph the colors exactly right but it is very close...

I've been sick over a week with the nasty bronchial 'thing' that has been going around here. Hoping to be able to paint outdoors again on Monday. The autumn landscape is so beautiful now in the Saratoga Springs area of NY.

Charlton Pond, "Plein Air Autumn Landscape Painting" by Marina Petro

"Charlton Pond" was painted on the most beautiful autumn day at the edge of a small pond in West Charlton, NY...just down the road from my friend Debbie's house who was also there painting with me. We had driven around the area for quite some time before choosing this location.

There were many other beautiful spots I would have loved to paint but...the reality with plein air painting is that if there's no where to park your car along the road and a small flat area to set up an easel, you are out of luck.

Today's Quotation:  Do it no matter what. If you believe in it, it is something very honorable. If somebody around you or your family does not understand it, then that's their problem. But if you do have a passion, an honest passion, just do it.

The inspiration for "Lotus" was the  lotus/water lily fountain  at YADDO Artist Retreat in Saratoga Springs, NY. This magnificent retreat was founded in 1900 by the financier Spencer Trask and his wife Katrina, herself a poet, Yaddo is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its mission is to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment.

"Lotus" contains the primary colors that are considered healing (green) , spirituality (white), enlightenment (yellow-gold) , love (pink) and intuition, deep contemplation (indigo).

From ancient times the lotus has been a divine symbol in Asian traditions representing the virtues of sexual purity and non-attachment.  Hindus revere it with the divinities Vishnu and Lakshmi often portrayed on a pink lotus in iconography. In the representation of Vishnu as Padmanabha (Lotus navel), a lotus issues from his navel with Brahma on it. Goddess Sarasvati is portrayed on a white-colored lotus.  Often used as an example of divine beauty, Vishnu is often described as the 'Lotus-Eyed One'. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul. The growth of its pure beauty from the mud of its origin holds a spiritual promise.

The inspiration for "Out Of The Blue"  was a sunflower I photographed by the side of the road on Lake Ave. in Saratoga Springs.  Sunflowers are one of my favorites among the floral family. They seem to have personalities and express a variety of moods. This painting lifts my spirit...may it lift yours...unless you're high enough already...
