Another painting from "The Zone." This one has a special personal significance. Not all of them do. I painted this spontaneously just before my beautiful mother died. I hadn't realized it at the time but if you look toward the bottom right you will notice what appears to be a figure in a sarcophagus. To me that was the fortelling of her death. My mother was born in Egypt. Now, mind you, I did not deliberately paint that image. I didn't know what I was painting at the time...that's where the great adventure and mystery lies in this type of creative expression. I highly suggest it if you are a painter going through an arid period or simply want to explore new possibilities.

Here's another painting from "The Zone." I think I will take a bit of a summer vacation and post this series for a while. I have new small paintings but haven't photographed/scanned them. I had company today, a daughter's birthday gathering over the weekend, paintings to prepare for display, cleaning up my studio for an upcoming studio tour, and a host of other things going on...I'd rather put my extra time into painting rather than photographing, etc...

Here is another painting from my "Zone." This is one of my favorites. Painting the tiny dots in the areas that appear to be out in the universe or outer space was SO relaxing...meditative. The whole process in itself is meditative but those little dots...really...I don't mix colors when I paint these pieces. I use the raw color. That's another factor with this direct, intuitive style that enables a greater sense of freedom. When painting in oils, it's rare that I use straight color from the tube without mixing it. I love painting so much and wish there were more of me to explore all the styles I paint in.

This is one of my paintings from what I call "The Zone." It was painted completely intuitively. Through the entire process, I disciplined my mind to stay open and not to form anything tangible. What's interesting about this process is that when I paint in this way with oil on canvas, a totally different style and content seems to emerge. What amazing adventures I've discovered painting in this way. I love teaching these "Painting From The Zone" workshops. It is so beautiful to witness my students discovering their hidden talents. I've posted these before. This has been a very scattered week for me and I'll probably post a few more of these "Zone" paintings over the next few days.

This painting was a joy to create. It is painted on a very smooth canvas textured panel and my brush seemed to just glide across it. One of the reasons I paint in oil is its sensuous quality...while mixing, applying the paint, even the smell. Oil doesn't dry quickly or smell like acrylics. I use acrylics occasionally when I'm creating one of my 'From The Zone' paintings because I need the quick drying quality to get the results I want.

This garden was painted intuitively from my imagination. Sometimes this works well and other times it doesn't. This one worked well...at least I think so.

I've been very busy today following my intuition and clearing up a few things I had no intention of dealing with when I woke up this morning. I have a backlog of new paintings I need to scan so I can post them. About today's painting...when I finished it I didn't think I did a good job on the limes. I was working too close to it. I put it aside, took a long break and when I came back it was if I was seeing it through new eyes...I really like it now.

This is the first mango I've ever painted. I've completed quite a few paintings depicting one or two fruits or vegetables on these 6x6 inch panels. I recently ordered and received a bunch of 6x6 gold plein air frames (3" wide) These paintings look simply beautiful framed. Up until now, it's been difficult to find frames for this size panel. Now that I can dress them up, I plan to begin exhibiting them. I'm sure they will appreciate seeing what the larger world outside my studio looks like.

I struggled with the first one. They loved it and the original painting, which I never thought was very good, ended up in my daughter's store in Sedona, Arizona-not for sale. She would tell me how often people commented on the painting and that she could have sold it 10 times over...so that's the story...

I particularly like this piece. It is so vibrant. Lifts my spirit when I look at it. I relate the color yellow to the sun...the giver of light and life. The color red is universally considered to represent 'life force.'

I am considering having an open studio some time next month, which means I'll have to clean up my studio to some degree. Hope some of you local folks will stop by and visit.

What is it about the full moon that is so fascinating?
Occasionally when I've just finished a painting ... or thought it was finished, I'll paint in a full moon out of the blue at the last minute. This one is one of my favorites though. It truly looks better in person than the picture here depicts. I hope you enjoy it!

I hope this painting displays as it should. It might be a darker than it actually is. The reds and oranges in the sun are deep and rich...they look darker and washed out here. I am not sure what happened when I changed my monitor settings, other than I can't get it back to where it was. I'll have it all straightened out Thursday at my Apple Store tutoring session.

I've been traveling in the outer realms and this is what I came back with to share with you. I have been seriously considering painting these cosmic scenes on much larger canvases....but, alas, there's still only one of me with enough inspiration for nine people...

I'm pretty sure this painting (especially the angel) looks better in person than in this image. I had to do a lot of photo editing to get it as close to the actual colors. I recently switched settings on my computer display on the advice of an employee at the Apple Computer store which changed the way color is displayed. I'll have to check out how my last couple of posts look on one of my daughter's computers this weekend.

I do think the painting depicts the sentiment of the title. I always appreciate your comments which can be left at my painting blog at the link below.

Another angel born from my imagination today. Once again, I thought I'd finished this painting, put it aside for a little while, but wasn't quite comfortable. I brought it back to the easel, defined the rocks a bit more, added brighter white to the angel and added the planets. Now I'm very happy with it. Now, as you are viewing this piece, do you realize that you are viewing something that has never existed on this planet before? One of a kind...That's the beauty and adventure in painting...especially from one's inner spirit...

"The Path" is the other piece I painted plein air at the Saratoga Battlefield near Saratoga Springs, NY. Initially, I didn't like it. It started to get dark and I was tired as I was painting. A few days later I looked at it through fresh eyes and was pleased with the outcome.

The photo here looks a little darker and a bit bluer than the actual painting on my monitor. I was at the Apple Store for a tutoring session today and changed the settings on my monitor to comply with my Epson printer. My monitor took on a bluer tone. Each monitor displays color differently anyway so there's never a guarantee that what you see is actually what is...

This lone tree was painted plein air at the Saratoga Battlefield. I am ambivalent about plein air painting. There's certainly the exciting spontaneity that is natural with painting outdoors (at least for me) but...packing up and dragging all my equipment to a location is a real drag...and exhausting. Hence, I don't do much of it. I do like how this painting turned out though. I'll post another I did at a nearby location in the battlefield next.
