If I hadn't painted this, I would love to receive it as a Valentine's Day gift for the sole reason that it would be a total surprise and I probably wouldn't have ever guessed what my gift would have been.

I was in a lighthearted mood a while back when I created this painting. The inspiration for the fish came from a piece of fabric and the turtle is from my imagination. The hearts were an afterthought when I felt the painting needed more..,

Here's another celestial piece that just seemed to paint itself....just flowed from brush to canvas. I am hoping that some of you out there are being inspired to explore intuitive painting in this way.

Many of you might have heard about the powerful Solar Flares that have been taking place. Here's a very interesting article "THE GIFT OF SOLAR FLARES" It includes a section outlining a variety of symptoms that might be experienced. I have been experiencing quite a few of them...feeling better today though.

I'm not ready to begin to paint them much larger, though....even though I want to. That time will most likely come when I have sold my house and found a new abode closer to Saratoga.

This painting was created on a smooth canvas textured board. The painting has a notch on the back which makes it easy to display with just a small nail.

'Toward Heaven" was created spontaneously. I didn't know what I wanted to paint and simply dipped my brush in the first color that I was attracted to and began to push paint around....I continued painting in this way until the painting developed. There are two little forms that appear to be birds flying upward toward the bottom right...can you see them? I'm happy with the resulting piece.

You haven't heard from me in a while, and might not hear from me for a bit longer after today. We've had a death in the family. (my ex husband-father of my 3 daughters) I'm still trying to restore my equilibrium. But, I wanted to post this painting while it is still available. This painting lifts my spirit. The orange was painted on a wonderful fabric pattern I've used before. The hibiscus flower is actually orange on the fabric, but I thought it would look better in a deeper rose color. Can you see this little gem cheering you up on your kitchen or dining room wall?

I love painting these large still life pieces. I've just completed a few smaller still life paintings for submission to the Mimosa Gallery annual small works exhibit that is coming up after the holidays in Saratoga Springs. I'll keep you all posted and I'll post my new small creations after I am through with this larger series.

At the moment, I am working on an equine portrait that was commissioned by one of my wonderful collectors who resides in Saratoga Springs every summer. A few other equine commissions are 'in the works' so I'll be busy painting for others for a while.

Can you imagine this striking painting in your dining area? The background for this piece is a sheet of decorative paper I found at my local craft store. I saw it and immediately thought ...what a wonderful painting some bright yellow lemons placed on it would make.

I originally painted this piece in a small 6"x 6" format which sold fairly quickly. I liked it so much and decided to paint a much larger version.

I'd originally painted this piece in a 6" x 6" format and it sold almost immediately to a collector who has one child. She said it represented her beautiful family. I liked this painting so much and decided to paint it again in a much larger version.

I didn't know what I was going to paint when I began this piece. I dipped my brush into the paint and simply began. At one point it looked like it was actually going to be a sunburst but as I continued to paint and it magically started to look like a sunflower and I decided to stop...so that's the story here....

Can you picture this neat little gem of a painting on your kitchen wall? I fell in love with the fabric I used as the background. After painting it as is, I put in the white polka dots to add a bit more interest. There was just too much flat black in the fabric. I don't think I'll ever get tired of painting fruit on colorful backgrounds. I'm still not back in the swing of painting and not happy about it. This is an older painting I completed a few years ago. It was painted Plein Air at the Saratoga Battlefield in Saratoga, NY on a very chilly, windy and overcast day. As much as I enjoy the experience of painting outdoors, I have a difficult time packing all the gear necessary, carrying it around and dealing with bugs, the elements, and invariably an aching back after a while.... Maybe in my next life...

Sunday morning, the second day of my Annual Open Studio, K. Madison Moore, a good friend of mine and exceptional painter who lives way over in Pennsylvania emailed me with the link to a very wonderful newspaper feature about me that was published in my local newspaper that morning. This photo doesn't capture the subtleties of this painting either in color or detail, but you get the idea. I am a lover of mist. There are times when I'm working on a painting that isn't developing very well ...that's when I dip my brush in white paint and begin to rub in and paint over the passages I don't like. That's how I initially discovered that I paint mist really well! This isn't one of those paintings though....the mist was planned and deliberate. I've been told that mist and fog are difficult to capture....it seems to come naturally to me though....at least that's what I've been told....

This lovely, serene little piece was painted from my imagination. When I need a diversion from more structured painting I usually just begin to paint spontaneously just to see what will manifest. What usually manifests is either a garden painting or a celestial painting.

At the moment, I am still so frustrated with myself and the slow progress I am making getting everything in order here for my Open Studio next weekend. I will make a concerted effort to discipline myself today and not allow any more distractions...and here's the perfect quotation for me below...

The inspiration for this painting is the beautiful countryside just up the road from my country home and studio in Saratoga Springs, NY. It is one of the rare acrylic paintings I've done. I must admit, I enjoyed using acrylic paint in this case, but oil remains my favorite.The photo here does not do this painting justice but for now, it was the best I could do.

Illumined Garden was painted spontaneously from my imagination. I love painting in this way. This painting invokes such a sense of peace. Viewers have told me that it seems to pull them right into the light. I had this painting on my studio wall intending to finish it. People would comment on how much they liked it and when I'd say "it isn't finished yet..." the consistent response was "don't do anything more to it."....so I didn't....

I've painted a few other plums on this fabric pattern in the past which have all sold. I love painting the deep red, burgundy and violet colors of the plum.

I haven't painted since moving the paintings and equipment from my studio on Beekman St. back home. I'm never quite 'right' unless I am painting consistently. The challenge has been to reintegrate everything into my studio here and keep it looking fairly organized until my house sells...not an easy task. I plodded along earlier today for a few hours, took a nap, and am exquisitely procrastinating getting back in there. Wish I could just wave a magic wand and have it all done....

I am planning to have an Open Studio here November 12 & 13. I will provide more details as we get closer. Hope to see some of you there!

This painting was inspired partially from a photograph as well as memory of landscapes such as this I driving around the countryside in Autumn. Observers have commented that this painting is 'haunting' and 'mysterious.'

To get the effect of mist on the trees in the background, I painted them in dark initially and allowed the paint to dry. Then, I began to gently paint over them with light gray, until I achieved the effect I wanted. It seemed easier to approach it this way rather than mix the gray color and apply it directly to paint in the trees.

At the moment i am periodically looking out my window waiting for the predicted 4-6 inches of snow to begin falling....ugh...a bit too early for my liking and just at the height that needs plowing. We've already had a light snowfall on Friday as you can see from the pic below.....and it's still October!

This painting was sold at one point but has flown back home to me....long story and I won't bore you with the details. I love this little painting. The bird's feathers glisten. I painted it when my teacher was still alive. I can hear his voice telling me....be patient, Marina....be careful...very careful. Even though it appears to be a small and simple composition, I actually found it quite difficult to paint....but...I am very happy with the results.

"In The Pink" is another painting I completed under the direction of my late teacher, Tom Vincent, who I miss more with every painting. It was sold this week from my studio on Beekman Street last week. This was the first 'close cropped' floral painting I've created. The inspiration for this painting was a bouquet of flowers from my daughter, Andrea's, garden.

Speaking of my Beekman Street studio. I am no longer there. I moved all my paintings and prints out this past weekend, which is unfortunate just before the holiday season. It was not my choice. I'll update you all in my newsletter as soon as I get my bearings, and make some progress integrating everything back into my home. I am planning to rent a small space at the Crafters Gallery in Saratoga Springs, NY and possibly have an Open Studio at my home studio next month.

This painting was difficult to photograph. It actually has more of a slight golden, muted hue throughout the entire piece. I toned the canvas with Gold Ochre Transparent prior to painting but couldn't capture it with my camera.

Autumn is such a colorful season here in upstate New York. I am looking forward to visiting our local orchard and picking apples with their leaves still attached....I've got 'a thing' for fruit with leaves attached. The leaves make the paintings so much more interesting.

The first thing I do when I go to the market is check out the fruit bins to see if I can spot anything with a leaf. It is rare, but I do get lucky on occasion. The trick is to paint them before they disintegrate. There have been times when I began a still life and couldn't get back to it before the fruit or vegetables rotted....it's a joke in my family.

This painting was showing off over the mantle at my studio on Beekman Street for a few weeks. It was purchased online last week. I will miss the peace it brought whenever I viewed it. The colors in "Standing Alone" are all considered healing and spiritual colors. Green is typically known to be the universal healing color (and the one that represents prosperity too) Yellow lifts the mood and enhances the mind. Blue denotes serenity and white represents the spirit....can't beat that!

Today, I brought in a large still life depicting autumn harvest gourds, vegetables and fruit to replace it. Now I'll be hungry when I look over at the mantle. I will post "The Harvest" tomorrow.

This painting was sold today to a lovely woman who visited my studio on Beekman Street in Saratoga Springs. I was a bit out of sorts, but the joy she expressed at finding this painting lifted me out of the doldrums.

"Out Of Darkness" holds a very special place in my heart. I began painting it under the guidance of my beloved teacher, Tom Vincent....he died before I finished it. It is one of the more difficult pieces I've attempted. Tom suggested that I paint the flowers on a dark background. I'd intended to include a sky in the background and hadn't ever painted a garden on a black background prior to this painting.

I procrastinated quite a bit, and must admit that I experienced a tremendous amount of resistance whenever I worked on it....very, very slow going and a great relief when I decided it was done. I'm happy my baby has been adopted and gone to a good home.

The inspiration for this painting was a photograph that my very talented friend, Zoe Murphy, shot. I saw it on her Facebook page and asked permission to use it as reference for a painting. Her photo is just below...I began the painting...at first I was pleased with what was emerging on the canvas but as I continued to paint, I felt I was messing it all up....yup, I was. I took the painting off my easel and placed it on the floor about 8 feet away and began studying it. I was not pleased at all with my progress. I decided to turn the painting around and voila!....it seemed to come together magically. That's when I painted in the moon, signed it and called it a day.....

On another note....for my subscribers who are from the NY Capital Region. The Arts District on Beekman Street in Saratoga Springs, NY is celebrating American Craft Week Saturday, October 8, from 10-5 pm. My studio will most likely be open until 7.

You will be seeing more paintings of fruit on this fabulous fabric find. I'm due for another visit to the fabric shop to scout for new designs. There is only one in this area and it's about 25 miles away. I don't always find something that strikes my fancy.

For the past few days, I've been painting a fantasy garden from my imagination. It has changed at least 10 times so far....wiping off and painting over areas that I thought were great close up and when I stepped back, looked awful... I got tired of it today, put it aside to dry for awhile and began another small painting of a lone orange with great leaves. I'm curious to see how the garden finally turns out.

Here is another still life fruit painting on a great fabric I found. I have this one showing off in a black 3" plein air frame in my studio in Saratoga.

During a very pleasant lunch on the front porch of the Beekman Artist Studios with some of the artists who are part of the coop, a few suggestions were made as to how I could rearrange the paintings in my studio. I was very open to the suggestions and agreed.....but a bit overwhelmed at the thought of rearranging everything. I've had an unusual amount of "life's interruptions" which have limited my time at the easel and I really just wanted to paint.

I walked into my studio a few days later and the entire studio was rearranged beautifully. I was in a state of shock! I thought I finally got my life's wish for a magical fairy godmother....she must have come in and waved her magic wand. As it turns out, Michelle Winne, a highly accomplished painter who is part of the coop rearranged the entire studio for me. It is beautiful! I'll take pics and post them soon.

More studio news...my dear friends Debbie and Marian, fiber artists, who were sharing the front space with me decided to move out. Their Etsy shop Beautiful Place is doing so well, they couldn't keep up with it all. For now, my studio is open to the public only when I can be there, which is most days for just a few hours...usually between 12-3pm take or give an hour each way.

I'm very happy to announce, though, that my daughter, Joy, will be sharing the space with her beautiful jewelry beginning in October....

I would put this painting in the category of 'healing art.' It lifts and calms my spirit when I view it. I've painted this theme many times...and most of them have been adopted by very happy collectors. When I need to relax or move away from paintings that require more analytical effort such as horses or still lifes, I usually turn to this garden theme, or celestial paintings. Both are born intuitively from my imagination and flow relatively freely.

When I brought my fruit purchase home from the supermarket, I noticed a little extension jutting out from the pear stem....the perfect opportunity to see whether I could get one of the cherries to hang from it....oh....the simple amusements in life...

Cherries can symbolize fertility, merrymaking, and festivity. In Japan, where cherry blossoms are the national flower, cherries represent beauty, courtesy, and modesty. The ancient Chinese regarded the fruit as a symbol of immortality. One Chinese legend tells of the goddess Xi Wang Mu, in whose garden the cherries of immortality ripen every thousand years. Because cherry wood was thought to keep evil spirits away, the Chinese placed cherry branches over their doors on New Year's Day and carved cherry wood statues to stand guard in front of their homes.

The orange in this painting was sitting on decorative fabric. When I finished the painting, the orange appeared like it was flying through the universe on a magic carpet....hence...the title Magical Orange.

Besides being a good source of vitamin C, here is some more information about the wonderful orange...

Orange trees are a symbol of love and marriage in many cultures. Oranges are sometimes found in Renaissance paintings of married couples. One of the most famous is Jan van Eyck's "Wedding Portrait of the Arnolfini".

Brides traditionally wear orange blossoms in their hair or carry them in their bouquet at their wedding. Orange blossoms are often part of the decoration on a wedding cake.

Queen Victoria was given a coronet of gold and enamel orange blossoms by her husband Albert. When their children were born, he had a jeweler add tiny green oranges to the coronet.

Would I love to be by the ocean during tonight's beautiful full moon!

This mystical seascape with the full moon appearing like a sentinel, was painted from my imagination. As most of my intuitive/spontaneous works go, I didn't have a subject matter in mind when I began. I put paints out I felt attracted to that day and began to paint from my spirit. At a certain point, I wasn't sure whether this piece would be a celestial scene or a seascape. The more I painted, the more it began looking like a seascape and I went from there. I am happy with the final outcome. Hope you enjoy viewing it too.

I am very happy with this painting. It lifts my spirit whenever I view it...

The horse was introduced to this continent by the Spanish, transforming this continent by providing its inhabitants with a freedom of movement and travel no other animal could provide. They pulled wagons and provided a speedy form of travel for the Natives. Because of the horse these people were now able to travel great distances along with their belongings.

Pegasus, Centaur and Unicorn are forms horses have taken throughout mythology. These magical creatures can see the essence of a man's soul. Once wild horses were in the millions, currently there are only a few hundred herds left. They were pushed off the land by humans and hunted for domestication. Despite domestication, their strong love of freedom has kept their spirit alive.

Here is the 'sister' painting to "Sun Kissed" that I featured in my last post. It sold yesterday at Etsy.

I like this painting quite a lot and will most likely create a much larger version of it.

As usual, I am torn between the different styles and subject matter I love to paint. I've been working on a series of Equine Portraits much of the time....however, I took a short break from my furry friends to paint a small still life and am working on another small one at the moment.

My plan is to visit the backstretch at the Saratoga Springs Racetrack to take pictures for reference paintings. I'll also go to the track but really don't like the initial hassle of getting in there with the traffic, parking and all....a little voice just told me 'get over it and just get yourself there.' Another plan is to visit Old Friends At Cabin Creek, a retirement home for thoroughbreds and take more pics. I fell in love with Thunder Rumble when I was there a few weeks ago for an equine communication workshop...I really fell in love....I can feel him in my heart. The light wasn't conducive to photos that day though.

Thought I'd stay in keeping with the family fruit series again today...this is the last one and one of my favorites. Family Portrait is considerably larger than the others and makes quite a bold statement. I'd painted a smaller version a couple of years ago which sold almost immediately to a collector with one child.

For those of you who live locally, remember....it is First Saturday (5-8 pm) in The Arts District on Beekman Street. My studio which is part of the Beekman Artist's Studios at 79 Beekman St. has invited the Jay Street Drummers. They will be drumming in our beautiful courtyard. Hope to see some of you there!

I like the shot of color the pear provides against the dramatic black and white zebra skin pattern. Life has been a series of 'situations' for myself and studio mates at 79 Beekman Street in Saratoga. We've finally been able to come up with a schedule for staying open at least for the racing/tourist season for the month of August. Our studio hours are 10-7. I am planning to be there most days from 12:30 - 4. If you are in the area, stop in for a visual treat. Beekman Street is so beautiful in the summer with flowers lining the streets of the shops and galleries.

This is one of my favorite little paintings. I was shuffling my fruit 'models' around on the kitchen counter trying to decide on the composition for the next painting. Thought I'd share a grouping of a few equine portraits displayed at my studio/gallery in Saratoga Springs, NY. Click on the pic for a larger view. I'm still working on my new baby shown on the easel. The right side of the canvas is now black and I'm contemplating painting stars and a hint of planets, but not quite sure yet. I haven't posted all of these paintings at my blog yet, so you are getting a sneak peek.

I've decided to offer commissioned Equine Portraits, with a special intuitive touch….The horses are painted true to life, and the backgrounds are painted with what I feel intuitively corresponds to the horses' spirit and how they want to be represented. This is a whole new world for me as I'd never painted horses before...they seem to come to life on my canvas.

I've painted apples and pears on this polka dot fabric before. It's the lemon's turn now. I'm not a fan of polka dots, by any means....don't even own one piece of clothing or anything else with polka dots....but this fabric cheers me up.
